Frequently asked questions
What is Kundli Milan?
Kundli Milan (horoscope matching) compares the birth charts of two people before marriage. The most widely used method in North India is Ashtakoota or Guna Milan, which scores eight factors based on the Moon's nakshatra and sign for a maximum of 36 points.
How many gunas should match for marriage?
Traditionally 18 or more out of 36 is considered acceptable, 21–27 good and 28 or above excellent. A high score alone is not enough: Nadi and Bhakoot doshas, Manglik dosha and the overall strength of both charts also matter.
What is Nadi dosha?
Nadi dosha occurs when both partners have the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya) and gives 0 of 8 points. It is linked with health and progeny. Classical exceptions apply, for example when both have the same nakshatra but different Moon signs.
What is Bhakoot dosha?
Bhakoot dosha occurs when the Moon signs of the two partners are 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other, scoring 0 of 7. It is often considered cancelled when both Moon signs are ruled by the same planet or by mutual friends.
Do I need exact birth times for matching?
Guna Milan depends on the Moon's nakshatra and sign, which change roughly every day and every two and a half days. An approximate time is usually enough unless the Moon was near a boundary; the Manglik check from the Lagna does need an accurate time.
