Dates follow the tithi prevailing at sunrise in New Delhi. Local traditions — Smarta and Vaishnava Ekadashi, Pradosh at dusk, Chaturthi by moonrise — can shift an observance by a day, so check the tithi times above or ask your family priest.

About Amavasya

Amavasya is the new-moon day that ends the dark fortnight. It is traditionally dedicated to the ancestors (pitru) — Mahalaya and Mauni Amavasya are the best known — and Diwali falls on the Amavasya at the end of Ashwin (Kartika in the North Indian calendar).

How it is observed

Families offer tarpan and food to ancestors, give charity and avoid starting new ventures. Somvati Amavasya (on a Monday) and Shani Amavasya (on a Saturday) are considered especially important.
