About Sankranti
Sankranti is the day the Sun moves into a new sidereal sign — twelve times a year. Makar Sankranti (into Capricorn) and Mesha Sankranti (the solar new year in many regions) are major festivals.
How it is observed
People bathe in rivers, give charity — especially sesame, grains and clothes — and the hours around the ingress (punya kaal) are considered auspicious for both.
